The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU is an excellent choice if you want your own local weather measurements together with a well-designed colour display and a particularly strong connected weather experience.
The supplied outdoor sensors monitor temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction and rainfall. Inside, the console adds indoor temperature and humidity and brings your key weather information together on a clear high-definition colour display.
Connect the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU to your home Wi-Fi and it becomes considerably more capable. The La Crosse View app lets you check your measured weather data on your phone, view recent history, set alerts and share access, while the console itself gains connected AccuWeather forecasts including hourly and daily forecast information, expected high and low temperatures and chance of precipitation.
That combination is the real strength of the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU: it is a very good complete weather station in its own right, with one of the strongest display, app and connected-forecast experiences in our home weather-station range.
Your Weather and What’s Coming Next
The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU measures the weather actually occurring at your property.
Its outdoor sensors provide:
- outdoor temperature
- outdoor humidity
- wind speed
- wind direction
- rainfall
The indoor console also measures indoor temperature and humidity and provides additional information including feels-like temperature, dew point, maximum and minimum records and detailed rainfall and wind information.
When the station is connected to Wi-Fi and the internet, the display also adds forecast information from the La Crosse weather service, primarily using AccuWeather.
This gives you two useful views of the weather in one place: what your own sensors are measuring now and what is forecast to happen next.
Large Colour Display for Everyday Use
One of the strongest features of the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU is its high-definition colour display.
Your main weather readings remain visible together rather than being buried within menus, making it easy to glance across and see temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall and forecast information.
The display includes adjustable backlighting with automatic dimming, high and low records, current and prevailing wind direction and clear rainfall information.
It can be used free-standing or wall mounted.
For customers who want the weather station itself to remain the main way they view their weather — rather than relying entirely on a phone — the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU does this particularly well.
How the AccuWeather Forecast Works in New Zealand
When the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU is connected to Wi-Fi and La Crosse View, the console receives enhanced internet forecast information through the La Crosse weather service, with AccuWeather as its primary forecast source.
During setup, make sure the correct New Zealand country and postcode information is entered for the station in La Crosse View. This location information is used to generate the internet forecast updates shown on the indoor display.
The connected forecast includes information such as:
- hourly and daily forecasts
- forecast high and low temperatures
- chance of precipitation
- additional forecast icons
The forecast is separate from the measurements taken by your own outdoor sensors. Your sensors tell you what is actually happening at your property; the AccuWeather information tells you what is forecast for your selected local area.
Forecast information is displayed on the V42-PRO-AU console rather than in the La Crosse View app.
The console checks the La Crosse weather server several times each day for forecast updates. Because those updates are received at particular times, the forecast shown on the console may occasionally differ slightly from the current AccuWeather website or app.
If the connected forecast appears to be for the wrong area, check that the correct New Zealand country and postcode have been entered for the station in La Crosse View.
La Crosse View App — Your Measured Weather on Your Phone
Connect the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU console to your existing 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi network through your modem/router and your measured station data can also be viewed in the La Crosse View app.
The app allows you to:
- check your station and sensor readings remotely
- view graphs and recent trends
- set customised push alerts
- share your weather station with family or friends
- add compatible La Crosse View sensors
The free La Crosse View service currently provides seven days of viewable historical data and one day of exportable data.
An optional La Crosse View Plus subscription extends the history and data-export capability and adds further alerting features.
You do not need a paid subscription simply to use the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU or its normal connected features.
Wi-Fi Is Optional
The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU does not depend on your home internet connection to function as a weather station.
The outdoor sensors send their measurements directly to the indoor console using their own wireless radio connection.
Your home Wi-Fi and internet connection are used for the additional connected features, including the La Crosse View app, AccuWeather forecast information and automatic internet time updates.
If your internet connection goes down, your outdoor sensors continue sending their local weather readings to the console. The connected app and forecast services resume once internet access returns.
Separate Outdoor Sensors Give You More Flexibility
The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU uses two separate outdoor sensor units rather than combining every measurement into one unit.
The supplied temperature and humidity sensor measures the surrounding air, while the Cyclone Pro sensor measures wind speed, wind direction and rainfall.
Because these are separate wireless sensors, you have more flexibility to position them according to what they are measuring — for example, keeping the temperature and humidity sensor away from direct heat and sun while positioning the wind and rainfall sensor in a more open location.
Both communicate wirelessly with the indoor console, so there is no data cable running back into your house.
The specified transmission range is up to approximately 121 metres in open conditions.
Detailed Wind and Rain Information
The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU gives you useful detail beyond simply whether it is windy or raining.
Wind information includes current wind speed, top wind speed and current and prevailing wind direction. Direction can be displayed using compass points or degrees, and a wind-speed alert can be set if there is a particular level you want to monitor.
Rainfall can be viewed over several useful periods:
- 1 hour
- 24 hours
- 7 days
- 1 month
- 1 year
- accumulated total
The display also records the number of days since the last rain.
When connected to Wi-Fi, forecast precipitation probability is shown alongside your own measured rainfall data.
Add More Monitoring Through La Crosse View
The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU can also work with compatible additional La Crosse View sensors.
Additional sensor information can pass through the V42-PRO-AU system for viewing in the La Crosse View app, allowing other areas or conditions around your property to be monitored.
The La Crosse ecosystem is not as broad as the extensive Ecowitt sensor range, but it does provide useful expansion for customers who want to extend their connected home-monitoring system.
How Does the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU Compare with Similar Models?
The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU is one of our strongest recommendations if you particularly value an excellent colour display, a good phone-app experience and connected forecast information alongside your own local weather measurements.
The Ecowitt WS3900 is our strongest all-round recommendation when future sensor expansion and free downloadable historical data are the priorities. The Tesa WS2980C Pro is a proven, straightforward full Wi-Fi weather station with a large colour console and an excellent customer track record. The Tesa WS1081 Ver3 is quite different, storing weather history locally for USB download to a computer rather than using a Wi-Fi/cloud-based system.
Where the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU stands out is the way it brings your own measured weather, the La Crosse View app and AccuWeather forecast information together.
If that connected experience is how you expect to use your weather station, the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU is a particularly compelling choice.
Why Choose the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU?
- Complete home weather monitoring — follow temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction and rainfall at your own property.
- Excellent colour display — keep your important local weather and forecast information visible together.
- Strong La Crosse View app experience — monitor your station remotely, see recent trends, set alerts and share access.

The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU is designed for home and hobbyist weather monitoring and is particularly well suited to customers who want a complete weather station with a very good indoor display and a strong connected experience through La Crosse View and AccuWeather.
FAQ’s
Do I need Wi-Fi to use the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU?
No. The outdoor sensors send their readings directly to the indoor console using a wireless radio signal.
You can therefore use the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU as a normal weather station without an internet connection.
Wi-Fi is required for the La Crosse View app, connected AccuWeather forecasts and other internet-based features.
Can I see my La Crosse V42-PRO-AU weather information on my phone?
Yes. Once the console is connected to your home Wi-Fi and La Crosse View, your measured station and sensor data can be viewed in the La Crosse View app.
The AccuWeather forecast information is shown on the indoor V42-PRO-AU console rather than in the La Crosse View app.
How does the AccuWeather forecast work in New Zealand?
The forecast is based on the location information entered for your station in La Crosse View.
Make sure New Zealand and the correct postcode are entered during setup. The La Crosse weather service then sends forecast information, primarily sourced from AccuWeather, to the indoor console.
This internet forecast is separate from the readings taken by your own outdoor sensors.
Why might the forecast on my V42-PRO-AU differ slightly from AccuWeather on my phone?
The V42-PRO-AU receives forecast information from the La Crosse weather server at scheduled intervals rather than continuously.
Because the console and AccuWeather website or app may have received their latest update at different times, small differences can occasionally occur.
Do I need to pay a subscription for La Crosse View?
No. La Crosse View has a free service level that provides remote monitoring, alerts, sharing and limited historical data.
The free service currently provides seven days of viewable history and one day of exportable data.
La Crosse View Plus is optional and provides longer history, more extensive data export and additional features.
Can I still see my weather if my internet connection goes down?
Yes. The outdoor sensors communicate directly with the indoor console, so your locally measured weather continues to display.
Phone access and connected forecast functions will resume once your internet connection returns.
Can I add extra sensors to the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU?
Yes. Compatible additional La Crosse View sensors can be added, with their information available through the connected system and app.
The Ecowitt WS3900 has the broader sensor ecosystem if extensive future expansion is your priority, but the La Crosse system provides useful options for extending home and property monitoring.
Who is the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU best suited to?
The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU is particularly well suited to home and hobbyist users who want comprehensive local weather monitoring but also place a high value on an excellent indoor display, phone access and connected forecast information.
If the display, La Crosse View app and AccuWeather forecasts are major parts of how you expect to use your weather station, the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU is one of the strongest choices in this part of our range.
Will the La Crosse V42-PRO-AU work with Starlink, and do I need a Wi-Fi extender?
Yes. The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU can work with Starlink, but the weather station requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection.
Current Starlink routers provide both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. If your V42 does not connect easily during setup, you can use the Starlink app to split the Wi-Fi into separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, then connect your phone and the V42 to the 2.4 GHz network while completing setup.
You do not need a Starlink Wi-Fi extender or mesh router simply because the V42 uses 2.4 GHz. Extra Wi-Fi hardware is only needed if the V42 console is in an area with weak Starlink Wi-Fi coverage.
If your home has thick walls, multiple levels or large areas of metal that reduce Wi-Fi coverage, a Starlink mesh router or other Wi-Fi extension may help.

Using Starlink? The La Crosse V42-PRO-AU requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection. Current Starlink routers support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, so a separate repeater is not normally required. If necessary, the two Wi-Fi bands can be split in the Starlink app so the V42 can be connected specifically to the 2.4 GHz network.
If the V42 is located where the Starlink Wi-Fi signal is weak, a compatible 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi repeater may be useful to improve coverage.
