The Ecowitt WH52 adds detailed soil monitoring to your Ecowitt WS3900 weather station, measuring three important conditions directly in the soil: moisture, temperature and electrical conductivity (EC).
Rather than judging when soil is becoming dry simply from the surface, the Ecowitt WH52 lets you monitor conditions where the sensor is installed and follow how they change after watering, drying or fertilising.
The sensor sends its readings wirelessly to the Ecowitt WS3900 console, which then uploads the data for viewing in the Ecowitt app and ecowitt.net.
Three Soil Measurements in One Sensor
The Ecowitt WH52 measures:
- Soil moisture — shows changes in the amount of water around the sensor, helping you follow drying and watering patterns.
- Soil temperature — measures the temperature within the soil around the roots, rather than the surrounding air, giving you a better indication of the conditions the roots are actually experiencing.
- Electrical conductivity (EC) — measures the conductivity of soluble salts within the soil solution, providing useful information about changes associated with soil salinity and fertiliser concentration.
EC does not tell you which individual nutrients are present. It is best interpreted together with soil moisture, because watering and drying can change the concentration of salts within the soil solution.
View Soil Conditions in the Ecowitt App
When used with the Ecowitt WS3900, the Ecowitt WH52 communicates directly with the console by wireless radio signal.
The WH52 readings are then available through the Ecowitt app and ecowitt.net, where you can see current conditions, historical records and graphs showing how the soil has changed over time.
This makes it much easier to see patterns — for example, how quickly the soil dries after watering or how soil temperature changes through the day or season.
You can also set alerts through Ecowitt for conditions you want to keep an eye on.
Please note: WH52 soil readings are not displayed directly on the Ecowitt WS3900 console screen. They are viewed through the Ecowitt app or ecowitt.net.
Monitor More Than One Location
The Ecowitt WS3900 can support multiple compatible soil-sensor channels, allowing additional Ecowitt WH52 sensors to be used if you want to monitor different areas separately.
Each sensor has its own identification, and channels can be named within Ecowitt so you can distinguish between the locations you are monitoring.
Designed for Outdoor Soil Monitoring
The Ecowitt WH52 has an IP66 weather-resistant housing and transmits readings approximately every 70 seconds.
It operates from a single AA battery with a transmission distance of up to 100 metres in open conditions between the sensor and compatible receiver.
For the New Zealand/Oceania version, the Ecowitt WH52 operates on 433 MHz.
Installation
The probe should be inserted vertically into loosened soil to the marked installation depth.
Do not force the Ecowitt WH52 into hard or compacted ground, or soil containing stones, roots or other solid objects. Ecowitt recommends loosening the soil or making a pilot hole first, as excessive force or twisting can damage the probe.
For general home and hobbyist use, the factory calibration can be used while you become familiar with the soil-moisture trends. More advanced calibration options are available if required.

FAQs
Can the Ecowitt WH52 operate on its own?
No. The Ecowitt WH52 is a wireless sensor and requires the Ecowitt WS3900 weather station to receive its readings and upload them for viewing in the Ecowitt app or ecowitt.net. It does not have its own display or Wi-Fi connection.
Does the Ecowitt WH52 work with the Ecowitt WS3900?
Yes. The Ecowitt WH52 is compatible with the Ecowitt WS3900. The Ecowitt WS3900 should be running current compatible firmware.
Will the WH52 readings appear on the Ecowitt WS3900 display?
No. The Ecowitt WS3900 receives the WH52 readings and uploads them, but the soil moisture, temperature and EC readings are viewed through the Ecowitt app or ecowitt.net rather than on the WS3900 console screen.
What does EC mean?
EC stands for electrical conductivity. It measures how readily electricity passes through the soil solution, which changes according to the concentration of dissolved salts.
It can therefore help you follow changes associated with fertiliser and soil salinity, but it does not identify individual nutrients and should be considered together with the soil-moisture reading.
Can I use more than one Ecowitt WH52?
Yes. The Ecowitt WS3900 supports multiple soil-sensor channels, so separate Ecowitt WH52 sensors can be used to monitor different locations.
Does the Ecowitt WH52 need Wi-Fi?
No. The Ecowitt WH52 itself communicates with the Ecowitt WS3900 using a wireless radio signal. Your Ecowitt WS3900 uses your home Wi-Fi and internet connection to upload the readings so you can view them through the Ecowitt app and ecowitt.net.
